Sports Journalist
Alpha Barrie Alpha was born in Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone. He started radio journalism in 2004 at Radio Nongowa 101.3FM in Kenema City in the Eastern Region of Sierra Leone. In 2008, he found himself in Freetown working for Freetown Radio 94.1FM until late 2011 when he gained employment at Radio Mercury 92.1FM.
He co-presents and co-produces International Sports every week day from 3:00 pm-4:00 pm and on Saturdays at 8:30am. A very versatile chap, Alpha Barrie Alpha also produces and presents the following programs:” Mercury Retailers Hour” on Thursdays at 4:30pm and “Mercury Health Talk” on Sundays at 5:00 pm. He is also a Lotto Draw Announcer as if the above workload is insufficient (laugh).
His penchant for radio journalism was derived from his admiration for the late Sierra Leonean former BBC stringer Prince Brima and Voice of America’s (VOA) David Buakay Vandi.
In his cupboard are many sports awards and certificates he scooped from the Central One Football Association (COFA), Kroo Bay Football Association (KBFA) and King Tom Football Association (KFA) all in central and west of Freetown. He unsurprisingly won the maiden Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL) National Sports Awards as the “Best Print Sports journalist” 2012/13.
Alpha Barrie Alpha has a Certificate in Basic Engineering Automotive (BEA) from Eastern Polytechnique in Kenema City, and also MVT 1 from City and Guilds of London Institute. He’s married with children.
